June Discussion Group

Sunday, May 16th, 2010
Jun
13
7:00 pm

NOTE: Sunday meetings have been changed to the second Sunday of each month, beginning in June. The new date for the June meeting is the 13th, still at 7pm, still at Scott’s home.

We meet for a discussion/support group on the first Sunday of each month. The next meeting will be June 6th 13th at 7:00pm at Scott Nicholson’s home (map below).

Due to feedback we’ve received, we’re going to try to make these meetings both more structured and more casual. Discussion will begin at 7:15, will be gently moderated to help prevent major tangents, and will end promptly at 8:15 to allow for socializing and visiting.

We will try to restrict discussion to a specific topic each month. Suggestions for topics are welcome and can be posted here.

This month’s topic: Coming out to children… When is it appropriate to do so? How should it be done? What issues should we be aware of?

Those of you who are not out to your children may have other questions to ask. Those who are out will have experiences and ideas to share. Please come and contribute.

TIME: 7:00pm
PLACE: Scott Nicholson’s home, 5342 West Ted Way (4160 South)

Utah Gay Fathers Organizing Meeting

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

The Utah Gay Fathers met today to formalize an organization and direction for the group.  The group has been meeting now for 3 months and has gained a good following.  The future schedule of the Utah Gay Fathers group was discussed and it was agreed that the next monthly meeting would be held December 6th at 7:00 PM.  The Utah Gay Fathers also agreed to add a second meeting monthly for purely social interaction.  The First of these meeting will be held at Divas Coffee Shop, 1500 East and 33rd South November 18th.

Good meeting last night. Call to organize (Darin nominated and sustained “Supreme Leader,” and Terry nominated and sustained as Co-Supreme Leader).

Decided to meet at 7pm the first Sunday of each month, and hold an informal gathering at 7pm on the 3rd Wed.’s of each month at Diva’s (1560 East 3300 South, Salt Lake City) for casual social get-together and “coffee.”

Decided to do a couple of events a year with the kids (picnic at a park, Lagoon, etc.), but keep the monthly group activities to just the men and our discussions. Decided to do Pot Luck on only those special occasions, and to not make the Sunday gatherings about food at all. Decided to make a website and blog as a means to keep connected, not relying solely on FaceBook and Yahoo. Details about website (agenda, calendar, stories, links, resources, roster of membership, blog, etc) .. forthcoming.

For now, through 2009 — 18 Nov and 16 Dec – Coffee at Diva’s
6 Dec – Sunday Group in West Valley (details coming)

That’s All Folks!

Terry, you beat me to the punch this morning! :-)

Again, thank you for hosting us at Cucina Nassi last night, and for typing up some notes from the meeting last night, as well as to you, Steve, and Ben all for hosting the last few gatherings!

We very much appreciate you opening your home again, Ben, for our get together on December 6th at 7:00 p.m. (We’ll get additional information on the location in the coming days).

Also, a HUGE thank you to Karl Bennion for ALREADY getting us “up and running” on our new website. After the meeting last night, he already jumped online and registered our domain name at: www.utahgayfathers.com, and has begin putting together the site itself, including the charter and a few of his thoughts about the meeting. We’ll eventually have everyone register over there, as well as getting up calendared activities, and I’ll be working on compiling a Membership List. Other plans include a resource page, helful links, etc. Feel free to stop by and check out it’s humble beginnings, already, and email us with comments/suggestions (to start with, we can email here through the group–eventually, we’ll try to migrate everything over there)–and thanks again, to Carl!!! (We’ll get more info on the site out, ASAP).

For those that wish to be included on our Membership List, please send me as much of the following information you feel comfortable sharing:

Your Name
Address
Email Address
Any relevant Phone Numbers you’re comfortable having members contact you on

On our new website, there’s a place for you to create and edit your own profile, including a space in which you can add “biographical information.” I’d encourage everyone to share whatever you’re comfortable sharing about yourselves, there, including potentially some of your own background experience, how many children you have, their ages, where you are in your own “coming out” and “marital/partnership” status, etc.

Would it be uncomfortable to also include the number, ages of our kids, as well as relationship status on the Membership list…?

There’s a lot of ideas still rolling around my head, after the great meeting last night. Good seeing so many of you, as well as so many new faces.

Thanks again for everyone’s participation, and look for more from us, soon!
